Robert Melvin "Mel" Nixon, 89, of Lansdale, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, after a courageous battle with lung cancer at Elm Terrace Gardens where he resided for the past seven years. Mel lived in Worcester, PA for many years before retiring to Lady Lake, FL. Born on November 28, 1924 in South Norfolk, VA, Mel was the son of the late William Nixon and the late Lucille (White) Williams. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Peggy Riley) Nixon who passed away in January 2000. Mel had one sister, Evelyn Mashintonio, who predeceased him. He was raised in Conshohocken, PA, graduating from Conshohocken High School class of 1943. Mel served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a radioman second class. He retired as warehouse manager at York International of Audubon, PA in July 1888. Mel is survived by two daughters, Peggy Joy (Robert) Swope of Jeffersonville and Patricia Ann Nixon of Pottstown. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Dr. Stacey Ann Gorski (fianc Justin) of Sellersville, PA. Mel loved sports and enjoyed watching both the Phillies and the Eagles but watching the Duke basketball team under Coach K gave him the greatest pleasure. In his younger days, Mel was an accomplished bowler and during his golden years, he enjoyed golfing until suffering a stroke in 1999. A memorial service will be held in the Dorothy Morris Room (second floor) at Elm Terrace Gardens on 660 North Broad Street, Lansdale, PA on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 AM.
